Beggers Bridge

One from the last time I was in Yorkshire,no need to explain to the folks that live in this area but Beggar's Bridge was built by Thomas Ferris in 1619. Ferris was a poor man who hoped to wed the daughter of a wealthy local squire. In order to win her hand, he planned to set sail from Whitby  to make his fortune. On the night that he left, the Esk was swollen with rainfall and he was unable to make a last visit to his intended. He eventually returned from his travels a rich man and, after marrying the squire's daughter, built Beggar's Bridge so that no other lovers would be separated as they were.

What a lovely old bridge and a lovely story to go with it. 

Is the bridge still in use Paul, I just wondered as there is someone standing on the bridge behind?

Thank you Annie, I do not know if it is in use, there is someone on the new bridge that replaced it but not the old one, that is a raised brick though at that size it could look like a person.

Very nice Paul, looks a nice spot on a warm summers day for a picnic and a paddle.

I agree - nice story, nice bridge, very nice photograph.

For me, the figure on the bridge is a bit of a distraction, but that's just a VERY minor niggle.

Thanks guys, it was never going to be printed I just liked it for the story that went with it, I was not going to take a pic of it till a friendly local told me the story of it.
