I'm waiting for the eggs  of the resident Mallards to hatch... Here is a snap from the archives showing one brood making their way down to the pond about 80 yards away . I have to open a gate to let them through and the journey over some open lawn is often perilous with crows and sparrowhawks lying in wait .

I  know Nature is red in tooth and claw  but it is hard to stand by when one can help a bit to increase the odds  of them making it to the sanctuary of the pond at least on their first day,  so I try to be around to accompany them.

Onward and upward seems to be the motto of the lead duckling ... maybe his name is FUJI ;)

Thank you Paul ...... one had 16 ducklings last year...and finished up with 3 by the time the predatory birds and the foxes  had found them. Still that's why they have so many eggs I suppose.. I don't engage with them once they make it to the pond as they lose their  natural fear if I feed them etc and that just make them even more susceptible.
