    feel safe?

I err on the side of caution with social media when I'm away from home; I don't post holiday pics or locations that would give anyone the idea that there's no one in, even though the kids may be at home!
  2. Hi Paul and welcome to the forum!
  3. Thank you for the info, looks like I've opened up another can of worms! This is all very interesting stuff because I'm finding on some of my pics that the foreground or background is not crisp. I've been pushing to extremes the closeness of some of the foreground items, results have been interesting, a few happy accidents and a few failures. I'm off now to do some more reading, hopefully I won't end up in a "circle of confusion"! Here is an example of a happy accident, it was all supposed to be in focus
  4. I picked up an old Pentax 50mm (K mount) with the idea of using it with a reversing ring for macro. However, I was intrigued by the aperture ring and the markings that surround it. After some research, I believe I'm right in concluding that if this lens was fitted to the correct camera, if it was set to f22, I could set the focus ring with the infinity mark aligned with the nearest DOF focus point for f22. This would maximize the DOF to focus on things from a few feet to infinity. Now here is the question; with a lens with no aperture ring or markings on the focus ring, ie, Nikon AFS DX G series, how can I maximize the DOF to make sure I get everything from infinity to the closest point in focus? That question sounds as clear as mud, but I don't know the correct terminology for some of these things. Hope some of you may understand what I'm asking.
  5. Yeah very enjoyable, I'm really learning to see things; colour, texture, light and shade, shapes etc. I like to think I'm training my eyes so that I will know whether I would delete it when I see it on screen. Today I saw a boat on wet sand after the tide had gone out. There were footprints leading from the boat and a slipway. I must have taken 20 shots believing that the POTW was in there somewhere, but it just did not work. Good thing is, the tide will come in and I get to go and take the same shots over again tomorrow!
  6. I was wondering what the attrition rate is for other photographers. How many shots do you take to get one good one? or looking at it the other way, how many shots don't make the grade after a shoot? I ask this question because last night I went up into the village to run a small errand and decided to take my camera with me just in case. I looked up at the church tower and click, my first shot. Half an hour later I was back home, I couldn't believe I'd taken 84 shots. As it turned out, the first one was the only one I felt worth keeping. Today I went out for a walk with my wife, we were only out for a couple of hours but I bagged 186 shots of which only 36 are worth working with. Maybe I try too hard, maybe I should just trust my instincts and only take that picture that I see instead of trying to work a scene and make something of it. Is it like this for you guys?
  7. Hi Jonni, welcome to the forum. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your pics!

    POTW w/e 18/8/13

The proof of the pudding is in the eating they say; a feast for the eye as well as breakfast. A well deserved POTW

    Photobucket?

You are absolutely right Richard, I have just signed up and I have a Pro account.

    Photobucket?

I've just checked my account and there is no mention of this, but I can access BT Cloud.
  11. I prefer the like button to having 20 posts saying nothing more than "nice shot" or "well taken". I click the like button if I genuinely like a post, but I don't make a comment unless I have something to say that hasn't already been said.
  12. Methinks you get more than one or two good ones Nanny, I've just been looking at your fishing crows: shots of a lifetime if you ask me!
  13. Don't be too had on yourself Nanny, a new lens will bring you lots of luck. Lets face it, I've had more than my fair share of beginners luck since I bought a camera!
  14. Congratulation on the new baby, looking forwards to seeing some great pics!
  15. Fantastic! One of the reasons I post so much on FB is that I want my descendants to be able to see who I was and what I did rather that have to search for my birth and death certificate to trace their ancestry!
  16. Funny you should ask that question Nanny, I've been reading up on bracketing and found out how it works on my camera. Yesterday and today I've bracketed everything. I started out by using + & - 2, but the results looked a bit extreme. I switched to + & - 1 with better results. I'm beginning to wonder how this is a benefit if I shoot in raw, because I have up to 2 stops compensation in NX2. A downside to bracketing is that I have to remember to take 3 shots each time or else I mess things up.
