If you go mirrorless (talk to BP about Fuji) you can get virtually the identical quality for a greatly reduced size and weight. And I'd say it's not only the future but almost the present too.
i agree i swapping from a canon 7D to a Olympus EM1 for the reduced size and weight and still have quality.

So, the other week taking pics at RAF Lakenheath I ran into a chap who was using a Nikon D7200 with a Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG OS lens. After admiring the close ups he had, I fell into envy mode. I did google them when I got home and according to a website they are compatible with all Nikon Cameras, there was even a review by a fellow D5300 user who said it worked well on his.
Now, envy mode tends to sneak up on me and this morning I was scurfing around fleabay and found one of those lens for sale, not only for sale at a very reasonable price but it was only 35 miles away from me. I paid for it online after making an offer and getting a tenner knocked off (that will pay for the petrol money I thought) Off I drove over to the sellers house 'tuit suite' to collect the beauty, and guess what..it would not autofocus, it did on both of his Cameras and mine autofocused using one of his other lens. Despite the lens having had a firmware update from sigma especially for this problem. So, the sale was cancelled and got me hard earned cash back in the bank.
I doubt i can afford to splash out on a Nikon lens of the same size, but then re-reading the reviews for the sigma show it to be a little on the down side for clarity and focus speed. Maybe a good thing to learn now rather than after. I now need to look for a 150 or 200-500 lens that will work well with the D5300. Birds and planes a going to have to wait a little longer!
the 3rd party mine field i've had that issue as well. are you a spotter ? my second home is normally out side a air base. i go to RAF Lakenheath and mildenhall alot. but i go all on the east side of the country RAF and USAF.

i'd buy the olympus EM1 mk2 and the 300 F4. and if there any change left maybe one of the fast F0.95 25mm lens.
