ok so we know the weather is horrid (except dee) when I was out photographing the birds the other day they all seemed to be flat and lifeless.... is there something I can do in camera?... or do I just need to stop being lazy and (almost admits defeat) EDIT!

here's an example of a simple ducky poo's.... (edited in Flickr as I'm too lazy to use photoshop)

Grey overcast lighting flattens tones and desaturates colours, on such days increase the contrast and saturation settings on your camera if you are allergic to editing, don't forget to change them back on sunny days.;)

Your edits are absolutely fine as they are Leon (the whites on the duck were already blown - only shooting RAW or EV to minus, would have prevented that.) The fact is, for edits like this - increasing saturation and contrast - you don't need Photoshop; I would have used iPhoto, you can use Picasa or something equally straightforward.
