The colour balance is quite interesting and unusual - the purple lighting has an impact.

It's actually difficult lighting! This is a situation where perhaps it is better to underexpose (by at least one stop) and then carefully lift the shadows in PP. Also, I'm not sure the starburst filter does anything for this? There are just too many lights and it therefore looks overdone.

It certainly has potential though.

Not a serious attempt to get accurate colour. I think it would be mission impossible given the mixed lighting.

There was no filtration. Effects filters are a no go area for me.

Given the camera was a Sony A100 or A200 and the high ISO used I think playing with the shadows would be a dodgy exercise!

Do you think you may have accidentally switched the starburst on? I'm not sure how you'd get that effect naturally.

Hmmm

I no longer have an A100 or A200 but I have no recollection that there was such a filter. And I shot in RAW so no effects possible in any case.

I guess the starburst like effect is a consequence of specular highlights and maybe a bit of rain or at least a damp atmosphere.

I took some Blackpool Iluminations shots on my A580 a few weeks ago with no hint of a starburst effect around the lights or fireworks.

I'll put an unedited ( anyhow as edited by my IPad from a RAW file) shot of the lights as a comparison.

Answering my own post.

I don't have the Blackpool shots on my IPad and it is too much of a faff to use iTunes to load them and loose the other stuff previously loaded with itunes. And I am going South tomorrow for a few days of house hunting.

Anyhow the only hint of starburst effect is in bright streetlights - and it is only a hint.

Perhaps the lens was the culprit in the Tenby pictures?

I guess the colour renditions are off putting.

If I was a documentary photographer your observation could be welcome!!!!

Jeff

Not sure I understand you. But I was not having a "dig" at your image. My apologies if I have come across this way. Not my intention. :)

I thought your comments were very fair. I prefer an honest opinion. I have no problem with being told my photo has missed the mark.

The point about disturbing was that that can be the intention of documentary photography in which case disturbing is affirmation that the photographer has done a good job.

I like the scene jef (where is it?) but I find the lighting a bit like a really nice pair of shoes that dont quite fit, That said, I don't think I could have done any better

Tenby in Pembrokeshire.

If I went back this year I would do a better job and spend more time in Lightroom or PSE doing local adjustments. For a start I would need to look carefully at the hue of the church spire.

I know that town so well! This is a lovely change from the usual 'harbour shots'.

A friend of mine and David's lives in a house facing the harbour just off the left of this photo.

I envy his house location. Also it must be brilliant having so much seascape and landscape potential shots almost on the doorstep.

Thanks for the clarity Jeff. I understand you. :)
