Nikon 1 J1 error message at 10-12mm

My dad's over in Australia at the moment and he has emailed me saying his camera (Nikon 1 J1) is giving an error, but only at 10-12mm (10-30mm lens). Anything over 12mm and it's fine and takes pictures. The error message is: "Lens Error. Contact a Nikon-authorised service center". He's tried re-mounting the lens and cleaning the contacts but still gets the error and can't take pictures at the widest focal length. Does anyone know what would cause an error like this please? I find it odd that it only happens at the widest setting.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks Colin. I've suggested he try updating the firmware. He's not really in a position to send it to a repair centre because he's on holiday in Australia. I'm hoping he can get it working again with an easy fix so he can continue to take photos at the wider focal length out there.
