Thanks Annie. Actually there's two of them in that picture, and around 10 or a dozen there altogether.

 

Colin - they're worth going to see, especially if you're lucky with the light like I was (or go at sunrise / sunset).

I have only seen these on TV. Apparently they improve with age,as the crustaceans build up. I too would like to see these. Do they become totally covered at high tide? I like the leading lines from the status.

 

No, that section of coastline - from Merseyside all the way up to Morecambe - is characterised by long flats where the tide goes a long way out, and then just slides in. I imagine the statues don't even get their knees wet?

 

Just to give you an idea of the scale (the opposite of your shot with the cyclist!), there's a Gormley in this next shot too, and all I've done is to thicken his ankles in Photoshop to make it less obvious which one is the statue:
