to do a proper high key where the eyes and face still stay in focus and "pop" can you just edit a picture or do you have to set it up in a certain way to start with?

a little of both Leon - Lightroom has a High key setting but any editing software will work better if, as in the picture you posted, the subject is wearing light coloured clothing against a white background (being blonde works well too).

 

 

This is one I edited of my Yvonne, which to be honest could have done with pushing a little more 'Hi'
