not sure on this one, the hay bale and the building seem to be fighting to be the focal point of the image

I see where you are coming from but there are two points main points of interest in the image ie: bale and mill house which is the reason for the deep dof for them both. i did at the time do two other shots focusing attention on each (bale and mill) and they didn't work for me, thats why I went for the first option which you see now.

Nice subject.

First use bigger image, it's much easier to comment on a bigger image ;)

Now my personal thought on what would have improved the image, Shallower depth of field, as Richard says the mill is competing with the bale to much, that mill needs to be blurred more.

The white spot in the sky, is that the moon? might be better with that cloned out maybe?

Also play with the crop, I can't make my mind up if the other bale needs cropping out, I think personally I would crop it

These are just my personal feeling and thoughts as to what I think MAY improve it ;)

Well here goes, my first upload. A time to get some tips from you guy's so i can start improving. Any tips or crit will be warmly welcomed.

Tanks, Paul.

I'm going to crit without seeing anyone else's comments first. Always the best way.

To me, it seems you're not decided about what your subject is. Is it the hay bale which you've got good and strong in the foreground? Or is it the mill in the background which is kind of poking out behind the bale?

To my eye at least, the bale on its own would be a good strong composition. Then you could jog over and get a study of the mill, closer to. Just my 4 pennorth.

I like this one as it is. The perspective of the top of the bale leads your eye to the mill. I don't see them as competing. I might just have cloned out that white item in the sky top left - I find it a tad distracting.

Hi Bill. Originally the empty space in the sky is used for a watermark in the original processed shot, I posted this one as I did not think you guys would go for watermarked images. Plus you cropped out a second bale lol. Sometimes when taking a photo i will purposefully leave an empty area for a watermark. On occasions empty areas add to the simplicity of an image rather than filling the frame with subject making the final image look cluttered and busy. As I am the new guy here I hope that my views are not annoying any of you more experienced toggers, but one of my ideas is that we all have our own ideas of what we want to get out of an image.

No offence will be taken from anyone expressing their views, we're far too light hearted for that here, unless of course they're down right nasty :)

Have to say that I am torn with the image. First glance and everything sits fine with me, I'll look again and think the large bale is too imposing. Hmmm  :hope:
