I only pay £30 a year Excise Duty on a 119 emissions 1.6 turbo diesel Ford Focus.  The identical emissions rated 1.6 petrol version costs £120 per year and is slightly slower 0-60. My friend pays £140 a year on a pre emissions rated petrol Ford Fiesta. Evidently like mine your car was registered after 1/3/01 Annie.

"For cars first registered before 1 March 2001 car tax is based on engine size as official CO2 data is not available.

  • Engine 1549cc or smaller – 2013/14 rate = £140 per year (£135 in 2012/13)
  • Engine bigger than 1549cc – 2013/14 rate = £225 per year ( £220 in 2012/13)"

Mind you in my Dad's day there were no such things as brake lights and he used to say if you ran into the back of the vehicle in front, no matter if it stopped suddenly, the police used to book you for driving too close. Nowadays of course you are forced to drive close since if you leave more than a one car space for safety in towns somebody will overtake and fill it!

However police have now been given more powers with extra fines for tailgating, using a hand held phone on the move or lane hogging:-
