basically I bought my camera 2nd hand from ebay, I have no software, downloading it from Canon needs the serial number from the box it came in, anyone got a spare disc maybe?, or can you point me in the right direction to get it somewhere online?

Hope this doesn't sound daft but, I'm on my 3rd DSLR and have never installed the boxed software. What is it you're wanting to do?

I just like things to be as they are, I had the lumix software for my FZ,   just because I wanted the choice to use it if I wanted :)

"OMG, HOW GOOD IS BEING ABLE TO CONTROL YOUR CAMERA FROM YOUR LAPTOP"

Most new cameras from Canon and Nikon can now be used tethered with either the makers or third party software.  Not much use if your out in the field and need to carry a laptop as well though!

The Pro's used to like it in the studio so the clients could see what they were photographing, not sure amateurs need it that much though for general photography, a thing gadget freaks will love playing with though. :yes

I think you can even use Lightroom for tethering?

Except there is software on the web to remove everything from watermarks onwards. Only safe way to stop pictures being stolen is never to publish them, particularly on the web. But then what's the point in taking them just to look at yourself?

If you can put that information on your camera using software, no doubt somebody can remove it using similar software and substitute their own details, providing of course they realise it's there?

Lets face it whatever security measures somebody comes up with somebody else can come up with a way of getting around them. If a British autistic youth could hack into the US national security computers with all their levels of protection, removing any security details off a web image has to be child's play. Also with identity theft these days they could simply pretend to be you if selling them.

Dave of course its really easy to remove if they know its there, if it gets nick and plod recover it (very unlikely) it would prove who it belonged to. The average thief probably wont be that photography literate to know that its possible to do that. Nothing is perfect and as for images being stolen it happens all the time, I send a please remove email and then if it is a business that has been using my image I follow up with an invoice. I usually wait for them to email back from the please remove email as most apologise and say the have removed the image. Thats as good as an admission of guilt so takes away any arguments about them not doing it

Main problem with the internet though Richard is it is probably likely it will be used in some other country and so taking action is difficult, even if their authorities are interested. Also even in the UK you have to twig your image is being used.
