Some have inbuilt slaves but some will require you to use a slave on them, but obviously you need the camera pop-up flash to trigger it.

You could pick up a cheap secondhand flashgun off EBAY and use the slave on that. No point in one with a lot of automation as you have no contact with a camera hotshoe.

so any flashgun can be used as a slave?

Yes if you attach it to one of these

Sorry geodar but "no" is incorrect. Almost all guns can be converted for pennies.

These can be had for as little as £5, I have some, rarely used now as mine have slaves inbuilt, but this will turn 99.999% of guns into slaves.

"Note: Compact digital cameras base their exposure only on the light emitted by the internal built-in flash and won’t make adjustments for the additional light from a slave flash, but when the slave is used for side or backlighting to better illuminate the subject, it should not adversely affect the exposure. A more powerful slave flash will extend the reach of the generally weak camera flash to give better exposure on more distant objects."

Don't use redeye reduction with these type of slave flashes or it will prematurely set of the slave flash.
