what would you buy?

I love my 70-200 F4, but it just does not have the range.

 

I cant justify £500-1000 on a piece of glass.  I could hide a £200 purchase from the SWMBO what would you get?

these are just examples I dont mean these actual ones... Robin has told me I should go for the 1.4x as I keep AF.

the latter would give me more reach on a 70D I think?

That Cosina is bloody awful - stay well clear.
With the 2x converter you'll lose AF as it takes your lens to f8.

i never really cared much for the quality of bokeh on the 100-400mm.  but the teleconverters are a pain in the butt.  they work with some lenses, they only work with manual focus on others and then they don't work at all with others, and that's with the canon tc's.  

i did post a short review and an image taken with the 100-400mm, but since i'm on midnight shift and can't manage to read correctly i just realized that you're looking at the cosina rather than the canon.  i haven't used the cosina so i can't comment.  a tc might work for awhile, but make sure it'll work with your 70-200mm f/4.

this is probably the best shot i ever took with the 100-400mm.  i'll have a look back on my hard drive and try to pull up a few older shots with the 100-400 with the crappy bokeh.

The lens in the link is a Cosina 100-400. If you're not happy with your Canon you'd have ten types of heart attack using that one ?

Nope

As much as I am a fan of the format absolute AF speed is not its forte and while it can give consistent results a DSLR with a good phase detect AF sensor - currently - has the lead.
