One For The Techies

I'm with the 3 mobile network and currently on the One Plan. It comes with unlimited internet which includes tethering and I use around 30GB a month with no problems at all, in fact I'm very pleased with the network.

I got our daughter a contract phone for Xmas again on 3 with the Ultimate Internet 100 plan which includes unlimited internet. Again no complaints regarding service/reception etc. but apparently the service plan doesn't include tethering.

My question: How do they know, if indeed they do, a phone is tethered to a computer or whether the phone is using the data for its own purposes?

Incidentally, she's using a Samsung Galaxy Ace which I have to say are absolutely dire. She'll be inheriting my iPhone when I upgrade in August.
