Jessops window

One of two stores may have made posters that read "The staff of Jessops would like to thank all their customers who shopped at Amazon - Killing the highstreet 1% of TAX at a time" and stuck that in the window on their last day.

There was others but they're not for a family friendly site.

Are the Jessop's staff saying that they don't buy anything on line from Amazon ?

I well remember in the days of the UK car industry going into decline workers at UK car plants going around with "Buy British" stickers in the windows of their foreign cars. A newspaper did a survey of the workers car park and found it was full of foreign cars and hardly any drove the ones they produced themselves. Robin you were one of the most enthusiastic buyers of new I-Phones and tablets with cameras which put you out of business. If you and all Jessops staff had refused to buy a smartphone with a camera in you would have been practicing what you preach and I guess you will be one of the first in line for the next smartphone upgrade? It was not just the Internet that killed off Jessops, but mainly smartphones with cameras. I am sure you will also continue downloading music to them or buying CD's online rather than keeping record shops in business too? Or will you never buy or use a smartphone again that has a camera as a matter of principle, or is it a case of as Alan implies with Jessops staff "don't do as I do, do as I say"? http://www.nation.co.ke/oped/Opinion/Phones-dim-digital-camera-business/-/440808/1639460/-/r8u9jrz/-/index.html http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2013/01/11/poor-service-killed-jessops-not-the-internet/

I think that is unfair to some people.

What they have to remember is, that although people like me have shopped quite a lot in Jessops, there are times when the only way we can afford certain things, is to shop on-line.

Of course, I and others would prefer to go into a shop every time that we need something, see things for ourselves and get the personal help, but that isn't always possible on a basic pension.

I have been in the position of managing to feed and clothe three children and my husband when he was laid off work.

Are we not to have any pleasure in what few years that we have left because we can't afford to buy things in the High Street.

I have heard of people buying their camera equipment in other countries while on holiday because it was so much cheaper than buying in this country.

Perhaps the Goverment should be blamed for the high taxes that they impose on goods that we buy in this country. Perhaps if the vat wasn't so high and import taxes, Jessops and other stores would have been able to keep their prices down and may still be trading now.

This is reminiscent of the city centre bench occupied by 2/3 old gents putting the world to rights with their "when I was a lad" comments and achieving absolutely nothing! We've all seen them and probably all done it but the difference here is that those affected, those whose very livelihood has gone, are able to listen in but are powerless to change attitudes.

This thread is now locked and any future similar debates will suffer the same fate.
