Public Liability Insurance

Recommended Posts

I got a message today from my local track asking me to share my photo's, we got onto the subject of media access.

last year they point blank refused, this year I think they realise they need people like me as much as I need them, the only thing I need is £5M Public liability insurance.

as a NON professional can I get this?  and how much does it cost?

thanks, Leon

I use Cliik insurance - £5m public liability. PI insurance (I think!) £250k per claim and up to £1m per year.  Camera equipment to £5,000 from vehicle, post or haulier's vehicle and various other things like monies up to £500 and items like: "All Fixed Glass and Sanitaryware" £10,000.  I do like curries but sometimes wonder what items like this mean

The premium is £317 this year and I think was just under £300 last year.

When I started I did wonder whether PI insurance was worth it but think that if someone asks you to take an event (wedding or whatever) and your equipment fails (e.g. computer crash and you lose all images) then the PI should come into its own.  And if you don't charge I don't think that's any excuse not to produce some reasonable images.  So, for me at least, I value the PI (Professional Indemnity) insurance.

Hi Leon,

if you are thinking of buying pi insurance, it may be a thought to see if you can get it just for the day when your on a shoot. it would be cheaper (in the short term) than a yearly thing, so if you only now and again do the shoots (2-3 times a year) then your covered, if you have a regular type of contract then yearly cover would work out cheaper.

You can get one day's insurance cover for cars, travel etc so why not for personal insurance.

my gear is insured (through my home insurance) if away from home for up to £2500, I never carry that amount anyway.

remember there will be an excess to pay as well if you need to claim.

if the equipment fails then his is why you carry several cards & batteries and carry (or keep in the boot) a spare body or some sort of quality small camera (and extras).

with covering your type of sport (fast moving cars), what would happen if you were hit by one of them or one of the cars lost control and you were involved in an accident?

any insurance that you have for yourself, personal insurance may not cover you (check this out) as you put yourself into a possible dangerous situation, as for other peoples cover, do you have situations where people are possibly in danger that is caused by you or your equipment?

Leon do yourself a favour and check your car insurance too, you really need a business policy for getting to 'wherever' if you have a usual normal policy speak to your provider shouldn't be much more per year.
