Although a new boy here would like to make a couple of points on the original comment.
I am a Nikon user!...........the white Canon lenses are high end pro,you can tell a pro Nikon lense by the build quality and gold lines....but then who cares, ive seen rubbish images from top gear and great images from kit lenses.....that said quicker lenses will out perform cheaper ones and fairly essential for certain shots, wildlife, sports etc....
I am lucky enough to use higher end lenses but doesn't automatically improve my images.....but always worth purchasing the best lense you can afford as like a dog,its for life! .....unlike camera bodies
Tip to jazz up boring Nikon lenses.....I wrap insulating tape around all my lense hoods for strength using black tape...if the hood is long enough I use some red tape beneath to show through as a thin line.......when snappers see my tatty hoods they come to the conclusion...wrongly...that im an old pro!

Im with Matt.....the Photamatix presets are great to get the image near to where you want then use....as said...LR/PS to do the final adjustments.
Im a big fan of presets but I always work on them after!
