H Kev and welcome.
This is a great place for learning, the people here have a wide range of knowledge and experience and often a slightly wacky semse of humour

Greeting Dougie and welcome

Hello Joseph and welcome

Interesting looking bits of kit and the history is fascinating as well. The wonders of the developing state of cameras eh? (pun intended)

I had the EH newsletter that mentioned this and wondered how good it was. Great to hear from a local that it's as good as they claimed
That part of the world isn't on my agenda for this year, but maybe next.

I had the same message earlier today when I came to the site on my phone (Android 4.4 with Opera mini browser) but it's been ok since then
*edit*: this was at the top of the main entry page. I do have the site and my browser set to remember me on the site.

It's a very pretty weed, though :)

Hiya Sheryl and welcome

Time for an update, this is the slimmer version compared to last year (honest, I really am about 10Kg lighter)
Just one pretty lady this time instead of the three last year, and I'm the one in the suit!
Canon EOS 5D mkII, Canon 70-200 F/4L and a helpful friend holding the camera, 1/400s @ f10 @ 73mm

Greetings and welcome Sam.
Don't worry about the equipment you're using, if it does what you want then it's right for you, and going by the pictures you have the eye to make the most of it.

and there was me thinking that was an LED ringflash on the front
Looking forward to the results (and I wonder if anyone will ask for the exif info)

Arrgghh...always a weekday when I can't attend!..........drat
What he said we are relying on Colin for the pictures of the day

Thanks Chris and thanks for the comments folks, this guy was amazing in performance with, as Chris says, energy and dynamism just oozing from every moment of the show.

I laugh when I see so called pros using stofen and similar light modifiers OUTSIDE, when they are 100% only intended for indoor use, what is a PRO these days, any twit with a camera it appears that people are willing to pay
I think that is a rather offensive blanket statement, if a twit with a camera can take good pictures that people are wiling to pay for then why should they not do so?.
I get paid for some of my work which, since I don't make my living from photography, makes me perhaps a semi-pro, and the people who pay me do so because they like what I do, and most of that business is from word of mouth recommendation, the rest by viewing what I've done in the past or from test shots.
I DO use a flash gun outside and even WITH a diffuser simply because I use whatever it takes to get the pictures that I and the customer want.
In many cases I could, and do, reduce the flash intensity and/or move it off camera, but even then a diffuser can soften the fill-in effect which is much more pleasing than any harder light fill.
I think it boils down to using whatever gives the right result. My 105mm macro lens makes a stunning portrait lens but it wasn't intended for that purpose so maybe I shouldn't use it for that purpose since that's not what it was designed for?
[rant over]
Back to the original subject, there are cowboy photographers out there, just as in every walk of life, and anyone looking for a photographer for any occasion needs to look at previous work and listen to recommendations from friends or previous customers, never just go with the cheapest unless they are also very good.
Also use contracts which specify what the customer will get, when, and for how much. That way there is legal recourse if either party messes up or changes things and there isn't agreement. (for example, cancellation on either side could incur costs)

I meant a good way to spend a few hours, it's never a waste to listen to what you enjoy
