  1. Spooky story time. Last time I set "Fire" as a theme and halfway through the week I thought it was boring, and I had an idea for something better that no-one else would ever think of in a million years. If there was a "next time", I'd have something up my sleeve.

Then along came Simon with Negative Space. "Wha-?" I thought. "The b*gger's read my mind!" Well actually he hadn't, not really, and now I have something of a quandary. My idea was

    NEGATIVE

which was simply that. In other words, invert one of your images and let's see which one makes the best (photographic) negative, looking for shape, tone, humour, novelty, stuff like that.

So after reflecting on it, I think it is radically different to Simon's theme and even though it sounds the same, it actually isn't. Not at all. So do go with this idea if it floats your boat. Remember - most image editors enable you to make a negative from your image: in Photoshop it's the "Invert" command.

The competition closes midnight next Friday April 7th. (If this proves to be unpopular, I'll try to come up with something else).

  2. If it's Dropbox, then yes you will lose the photos from your device (not the other way round though - you can choose to "move" things to Dropbox and not have them sync back to your device).

Dropbox are not the best option these days. You get 5GB free with the Microsoft OneDrive (create a hotmail address to get it)  and Google Drive gives you 15GB free (just create a Gmail address to get it). You can use both.

I have to say I tend not too think about noise too much these days.  I used to think I had to keep my camera on the lowest ISO setting.  How liberating it was when I started to use higher ISO.  It brought me a load of new opportunities and freedom.

It was no different in film days. Newbies and manufacturers went for the "least grain" option at all times. However, the best photographers used film grain to great creative effect when the situation called for it. Especially in B&W photography.

I remember it but was never that keen on either version, pretty miserable stuff. At least the PMJ is fun!

That's rather the point! What else do you expect from a song whose lyric goes "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had"?!

  5. Very surprising! From that, one would expect camera software writers to program for the maximum signal at all times, especially in P mode. Perhaps some do understand this, and that would certainly deliver less noisy pictures on the face of it. The only flaw in the logic is that more the signal increases (via wider apertures or slower shutter speeds) then the ISO should REDUCE to compensate.
