Nice set, looks like it's ringed an escapee?

I've no idea Rye - first appeared last spring, stayed around for a couple of months then disappeared until a couple of weeks ago. Seems to get on well with all the other more common ducks and although I'm shooting from the river bank over other side it is content to sit and pose. I was hoping he would go for a swim but he was reluctant to leave his 'friend' (the wooden post).

A little fill flash would help sometimes, even the pop up on the camera ( If it has one lol )

Also take a tripod and do some timed long exposure where the engines are still but people give motion blur, a great effect to show movement in the images

Hi Steve - I used a tripod for most of these shots, flash wasn't really an option with all the reflective clothing and usually ends up giving more problems than it solves. Having said that I wished I had taken my ring flash which can be left 'on'  at a lower setting.  I used a Sigma Art 18-35mm f/1.8 (pictures shot around f/2.8) which handled the dark/light really well (trust me it was a lot darker than it appears).

    Excellent set Colin.

    Thank you Rye

  4. I was recently invited to a training Evening with the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service, the 8 photos below where taken at this event.

The lighting was a challenge as I prefer to use the 'ambient' light rather than spoil the scene using flash.

Given free rein to go where I chose, hard hat, safety boots and a Hi Viz vest was a must.

I'll post another set at some point that shows mainly the people rather than the vehicles as here.

    All comments welcome.

Just had a mate on the phone laughing and said 'thats great I bet you had a few fooled by that photo you put on your facebook page'..... (a moments silence from me) ..I said what do you mean Bob? and he replied 'thats so obviously a video game screenshot'  (this same image !) ... he knows I dabble in a computer sim called 'Farm simulator' .....

I dont know if I'm hurt or not! :) I have just sent him the exif details...

and is he still your friend? 😄

I think it is very nice Denis, I would pull the yellow back a little but I can live with that as it is. I would love to have a go with  processing the raw file.

I'm not sure whether Lightroom has the same facility but you would think that ADOBE would use the same module in both Apps.

John- in LR when exporting/saving you have a drop down box with export location, etc and within that box is:  'Image Sizing' for web use I almost always use 1400px and at 90 ppi below that is 'output sharpening' I set to 'screen' and 'standard'. I find that works well for most websites but you could try the high setting.

Maybe I worded it wrong... I meant the other way around as in not closing down to a smaller aperture as in f22 which was common.

Tim I'm not sure if you are aware but the numbers on the lens usually refer to the widest figure eg f/4.5 I think you will find most (apart from some primes) will narrow done to f/22.

Having said that I'm curious to know why as I don't think I have ever set the aperture to anything near f/22, it must restrict light and shutter speed?

One thing that surprises me is how so many lenses for dslr's only shut down to 5.6? Back in film days that would have been pretty limiting for depth of field?

Most camera manufacturers stick a basic kit lens in the box which usually opens up to 4.5 at widest.

I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 G lens which you can often find a used version. I am assuming you are aware you can/maybe able to use older film camera lenses on digital cameras? Although you may find auto focus does not work - a member by the name of Fuji .

On the other hand I find using my 'cheap' 55/300mm f/4.5 -5.6 can give a nice short depth.

  9. £200 is not a great budget to work with but you will find something out there.

I can't speak for Canon as I have always had Nikon but in your price range you should be able to find D80 D90 D7000 DX bodies.

I would avoid the likes of eBay unless the seller is close by and you can view and test the camera before buying.

London Camera Exchange have shops all over the UK that sell used and are trusted https://www.lcegroup.co.uk/Secondhand-Search/?Order=Price&View=Grid&SHMake=&SHModel=&SHType=Digital+SLR+Cameras&Location=&Results=12

  10. I think being/the chances of a Professional are pretty slim these days. If you have a studio somewhere you are more likely to get portrait work for families, children, pets. I managed to get a job within a company as the marketing manager which involved a fair amount of photography and location work (mainly building sites) for use on their website and advertising I really enjoyed the work but never considered myself to be a professional photographer - (I should add after 4 years I've now moved on). During my years I increased my knowledge of Photoshop / Raw files / Wordpress and website creation and used Adobe InDesign fairly extensively.
