  1. You can get ICC profiles from decent printers which will allow you to 'soft proof' for the type of paper and printing process on screen (the paper will make a huge difference to how certain colours come through and how strong blacks are etc)

Monitor calibration and ICC profiles combined make for a much less trial and error printing experience.

One thing to note on a laptop though, an important part of the calibration is the ambient light falling on the screen - something that will change frequently on a laptop

  2. The windows start screen is just a full screen program files menu.

Once you realise that you can hit the start button and immediately type the name of the application or menu (control panel for example) you want to open and hit enter, you realise that actually looking for the application to click on is not a productive way of doing it :-)

You don't even  have to take your hands off the keyboard to find the mouse, much much more efficient

  3. Dropbox will save important files from a house fire though, this will not.

It uses Western Digital Red Drives I believe which are designed specifically for NAS usage. I suspect the NAS keeps them spinning. Google did some work on this and their data centres keep the drives spinning all the time, this reduces failures as the bearings don't have to keep stopping and starting the platter.

I was looking at the WeD Mycloud EX2 which allows two drives, for a chunkier solution the EX4 allows 4 drives so you could use RAID 1 + 0 I suspect and end up with 8TB striped and mirrored.

RAID isn't a backup solution though, rather a resiliency thing. If your house blows up or the thing sets on fire it is still gone. 4TB is an awful lot of data.

I am considering implementing one for a friend but how the external access works will be important and I can't see in any of the reviews online that anyone covers how this bit works.

  4. How does that work? What if your original has been cropped slightly, or compressed, or had the colour balance or similar exposure quality altered even a bit, would Google still find it? Or must it be an exact match in every respect?

Magic, I suspect. No idea how good it is or what methods they use, Google are quite secretive about their normal search methodology so I suspect there won't be much published on this.

  5. My serial favouritist comments on my work too, he seems nice enough and his photographic interests are similar to mine, so it is OK - I'm still leaning towards his wonderful taste.

That said, if you ever read I have been horribly murdered, remember this thread and point the police at my Flickr page :)

  6. I took the plunge and ordered the 3TB version from Amazon.

It was delivered this afternoon and within 15 minutes of unpacking it was connected to the iMac, I'd registered an account with WD, dowloaded and installed the necessary software and the Mac was happily chugging away on a full Time Machine backup. The MacBook in the living room also recognised the new drive no problem and test files transferred no bother.

First impressions are good. Very good!

    Korky,

Can you try to access it from outside your network? I need to understand how this operates.

  7. LogMeIn is an app which - as its name suggests - allows you to access your Mac at home using another device such as laptop or tablet. I'm assuming the WD My Cloud is similar? However, both imply internet access even if it's 'firewalled' and personal. The other option (I guess) is that your device "phones home" and is therefore connected to your router.

I believe the intention is that you can connect to the storage remotely via the internet, I think the device itself handles the security rather than the router.

  8. I believe you can remotely access files, but this needs to be set up and you need an internet connection.

My friend (yes, I do have one) who has the 2TB version is planning to test his on a trip to Germany next week.

    Korky

    Korky,

I would appreciate an idea of how this remote access works in practice if possible, if your friend has the time to describe how it is implemented that would be wonderful.

  9. I've been looking at these lately too, more specifically the ex2 version.

Does anyone have any idea how exactly it works when accessing the files remotely?

I'vread lots of reviews but none focus much on this aspect.

The WD red drives are supposed to be very good

  10. Take a copy of the met police Web page on rules re photography in case you're challenged by a policeman. I have a copy in the bag. Don't be awkward with them, I always answer their questions and try to strike up a conversation with them, most horror stories you read about interaction with the police involve the person refusing to identify themselves out of some silly principle.

Having a card with your contact info you can hand out to people you photograph can help, especially if it has a link to your site, you can offer them a copy of the photo!

I've heard of an app called easy release before as well which allows an easy way to obtain a release, although I've not looked at it.
