View NX2, I am a convert

Recommended Posts

I have rarely used the FREE software that comes with gear, and I believe this to be true for many people, we buy elements, photoshop and more failing to see just how good what free really is.

I had a need to download the latest version of NX2 and it is amazing, NEF files that elements could not convert were done in moments edited and saved and I am talking quite a few, now you can also edit a hour of video not just the old 30 mins.

So if you have not tried your free software for a while, download the latest and be impressed.

The other thing to remember about branded software is t will read the tags on your RAW files and carry over info such as colour mode, picture mode, sharpness, contrast, mono/colour.....in other words all the stuff you set on your camera that is lost when imposting into independent converters.

Of course with a RAW file you can alter them all as much as you like but it is handy if you tend to set stuff in your camera.

Except it isn't free - you just paid for it when you bought the gear...

Chris it is FREE - you can go onto the Nikon web site and download it anytime you wish, you can do so even if you do not own a Nikon or if you have bought a used camera that has no disc.

That's different from the SILKYPIX software with Panasonics, then. I uploaded the software from my camera's CD, then I was 'urged' to upgrade to the latest version which I did, only to find myself on a 30-day trial. Grrr.

Nikon also 'do' 2 other software programmes but these you do have to purchase

Capture NX2 - a far more complex tool than ViewNX . To be honest I would suggest buying Adobes Lightroom rather than Capture NX2, whilst it is very good I think both Photoshop and LR are better. For Windows xp pro or higher and macintosh.

Camera Control Pro 2 - Lets you remotely control and view through your camera (including exposure, shutter and aperture) via your desktop, laptop, etc. And WiFi or Ethernet connection is possible.

I have never been able to get my hands on this software to try and whilst it is probably more suitable to studio work I think it might be useful for those of you who own a Nikon and shoot macro??
