camera brands

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm looking for some numbers concerning camera (better DSLR) brand equity or market share. I only found this statistic which is from 2012 (http://www.statista.com/statistics/236748/brand-equity-of-digital-camera-brands-in-the-united-states/) and doesn't make a difference between DSLR and mirrorless cameras. I wonder if there are some current stats?

thanks in advance

Sorry, but I find camera quality judged solely by sales and/or share price to be totally meaningless.

My advice : by all means do some research before the event, but go to a camera shop and heft a few, see what they would be like taking shots, how they feel in your hand, how easy they are to change settings etc, then make a decision after careful consideration ... and don't disregard your own intuitions and feelings either!

As for DSLR versus mirrorless - the latter have evolved to be smaller, lighter, yet virtually the same quality as their larger brethren simply by doing away with the mirror/pentaprism arrangement. Some makes - Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Fuji - have a good supply of lenses and accessories; perhaps not as many as Nikon and Canon DSLRs but be honest - how many of their more specialised products are you ever going to buy or use?

One thing though, just to repeat myself - the share price of a camera manufacturer is absolutely and utterly meaningless when it comes to pursuing your hobby.

So where does the D4s and canon 1DX and the lower cameras come in this silly chart, and what % are all the models in the range

Looking at the chart that is irrelevant. It is trying to convey a high level consumer perception of each brand, presumably based on people rating their own equipment. Without a login you can't see the survey sample size or any other pertinent info though which makes it difficult to draw any conclusions other than there is little material difference between them.

Didn't even know Kodak still made cameras, or existed in the US.

Isn't it Kodak who've just patented a kind of replacement for Polaroids? (I may well have my wires crossed here).

Actually I'm not looking for a new camera (I wouldn't rely on sales statistics for my decision).

But I wouldn't call it market research exercise, I'm just doing a little homework for uni where we have to choose a company and describe it's economic development since the come up of the internet (and other technical progress) and which consequences this had for the acting of the company. Because I'm into photography I want to choose a camera maker in this section. And I thought this might be the right place for getting some information, that I can use to back my message.

Ah, now I understand.

I'm not sure this is the right place though? We understand the equipment itself, and some of us have taken a particular interest in a manufacturer's history especially where we've used those cameras, but I'm not sure that any of us are up on the commercial side of things?

The person who might have some insights, or point you in the right direction, is Black Pearl, who is or used to be in photography retail.
