I went to Harewood again at weekend, only stayed for 3 hours as I was cooking slowly!!

first time using the 1.4X extender that I was told was not sharp? it did sometimes fail to autofocus straight away but it was sharp when it did at maximum reach so I'm happy with the results....

Extenders generally don't work very well stopped down.  Until I discovered that, I was having autofocus problems.  Nothing wrong with the sharpness here though.  I find Harwood frustrating.  It is a difficult place to find a good viewpoint.
