Video editing tips?

Evening folks,

In a moment of weakness I agreed to be the video guy for my Brother-In-Law's wedding. I borrowed a friends camcorder, armed myself with an iPhone for capturing better quality audio, a DSLR for stills and did my best. I now have a bunch of raw material that I'd like to put together into a wedding video of sorts. The couple know I'm no expert and had never done it before so they're not expecting a slick pro edit but I'd like to make the most of what I have.

Has anyone had experience with this before who can share some editing tips? The guy who lent me the camera recommended Adobe Premier Pro for editing so I've got that.

Any tips for:

  • Creating nice transitions between clips?
  • Sources of graphics for intro and cut scenes?
  • Making clips out of still images?
  • Putting it all together?
  • Anything else?

Any help at all will be graciously received.

Cheers, Tim

Keep it simple.

Transitions are cheesy - you don't see them on TV and film.
Keep the start clean and simple - a plain graphic from the editor or a still from the day.
Still should just drop into your timeline - use them to separate parts of the day but keep the spare or it will interrupt the flow.
Use your timeline depth - clips, stills, transitions, music etc can all be stacked and kept separate, you don't need them in one long string.
Backup - backup - backup
