A Piece Of History

My father was a farm manager in Perthshire  during WW2 and the farm was seconded two German POW Luftwaffe pilots for farm work.  The two men were called Johanne and Hans and were  friendly and well respected in the area and  hard workers.

My mum and dad were newly married at the time and Hans carved two wooden birds and gave the to my mother. One with its wings closed and one with its wings out stretched. The latter  disappeared years ago but this one has survived and I still have it.

Little did this friendly German know it would still be owned and loved 80 years later.
