Thanks Paul, it was very enjoyable me and my sister went for a ride behind the Scotsman on Monday - it's running again this Fri, Sat and Sun - there's still tickets available.

As for your question, it was the signalbox man that went onto the track, it's a safety feature, to prevent two trains being on the same section of single track line they pass a token to the train. When a train leaves Ramsbottom for Rawtenstall the signalman passes the token in what looks like a small purse  with a loop. The token is also a key to the points at Rawtenstall, when the train comes back from Rawtenstall the signalbox man comes out to collect it ready to pass onto the next train.
