Dennyboy,

It is on the ring road,  there are some houses set behind it, but not a housing estate as such! and a football/rugby ground the other side. The roadway seperates the wall of the missing from the Cemetery, but it was designed so, the road part turns to large paving blocks so that it does not detract from the design.

That ring road was built by the Royal Engineers under fire as the heavy tanks and trucks could not negotiate the roads of Bayeux, it became the first 'peripherique' or ring road ever built in France.

I can't help comparing it with the American one, set in 100's of acres of woodland above Omaha beach and the peaceful surroundings. Mind i found the airport security and having to put my crutches through a scanner a bit OTT. The Canadian monument with all the name plaques and ages on i found gave me a lump in my throat.
