Everything posted by Paul

  1. Dandelion seed heads that seemed to mimic a gently flowing anemone or sea creature... Paul.
  2. Candy-stripe, Candy-stripe, Candy-stripe... Don't say the name 5 times... or he (or she) will come to get you... Don't have nightmares... Paul.
  3. The Opilio canestrinii, juvenile harvestman but it was running away - so all I have is the rear view... plus a sleeping dronefly on a leaf in the apple tree (taken at around 11.30pm)... Paul.
  4. Lovely lighting - well won Cheryl. Paul.
  5. Thanks for the update - we all seem to find times where we don't get around to much and the reasons are each person comes first, and the rest can take a back seat because oneself is the most important. Stay strong Dee and we'll all see you soon x Paul.
  6. Hahaha, no, it's all wild! I know there are many who buy some jumping spiders as pets (to photograph them) but I wouldn't do that... Prefer the real world... Paul.
  7. Paul

    Caddisfly

A rare visitor - must have come over the houses from the canal. I doubt my tiny pond would have been home to the caddis larvae... Paul.
  8. Eratigena duellica I think, being a spider in Preston! He was a very willing subject on his piece of stone in the garden. Paul.
  9. Not what I would expect in my garden, but a nocturnal visitor tonight. It's a caddisfly, though there are nearly 120 UK species so I would need an expert to narrow it down to which... It was however, very tolerant and made no effort to fly away. Paul.
  10. Thanks Geoff - in truth, photography is all I have. I've no other interests and our combined incomes don't allow for us to find other things. Every day I see people doing things that we cannot that I wish we could - so having my one hobby keeps me going (trying not to be overly dramatic here!!!) And it just goes to show that size isn't everything - and that good people can be found! Paul. PS. Thanks for liking the photos, lol...
  11. At least you're finding something. August should be the best month but these next two weeks also ought to see a rise in visitors. Paul.
  12. She chomped through at least 4 aphids! Paul.
  13. I go bugged-eyed looking for them Polly.
  14. Thanks Fuji. I have to master something - I'm hopeless at most other things!!! Paul.
  15. Thanks Geoff - not a background I would normally use - but effective surprisingly. Paul.
  16. My Venus lens was at mag - 1:1 Some things are just about visible to the human eye... I think the first one by the 5p coin is a soft scale insect; nymph stage (Coccus hesperidum). This was very tiny: and this time the lens was at full mag - 2:1 This globular springtail is likely to be something along the lines of Deuterosminthurus pallipes forma repandus Seen cropped: Paul.
  17. Hylaeus modestus - the modest masked bee, flew in through the open door and landed on the window. The moisture makes for an interesting background and the double glazing helps on reflections at the right angle. It moved a bit in the first but that was at the highest point and it was a stretch to reach. Paul.
  18. I think this is the common wainscot moth... Paul.
  19. Those colours are excellent. Paul.
  20. I was asked to be a guest judge for POTW and it's tough letting so many down in favour of a single image... As you know I'm a sucker for macro and bugs etc, and the dragons and butterflies and more kept me watching and debating... and then the locos and that wonderful traction engine caught my eye too. They are all up there this week. I really like looking at the wonderful blur of the wind turbines - and mono suited the scene so well... 2nd place is the wind turbines... But I gave my choice of POTW to Cheryl - her dove is so fluffed up, and the way the softness comes in from the lower corners and the subtle background changes just won it for me. So well done to CMunzel - my choice for POTW. Original post HERE. Paul.
  21. After the rain, the insects need to dry off - being soaking wet does most no good I suppose. Here's an Orchesella cincta (I think) and then the reasonably patient long-legged fly that allowed me to move around to different angles... Paul.
