The End is Nigh - what did you shoot this year?

Recommended Posts

As its Christmas and a time to share how about picking your favourite half dozen images from 2014 and posting them with a short paragraph about each.

Doesn't need to be the best you've taken just six that you like, remember for one reason or another or simply make you feel glad that you take pictures as a hobby.

I'll start things going with six that stood out for me as I scrolled through my Lightroom library this afternoon.

Shot while out for the day at Skipton, the boys were feeding the ducks and the swans wanted in on the action - you don't argue with a swan:

I spotted this reflection while out for an evening walk along the river a Durham. The light was lovely and the river had a glass like surface just right amount of wobble to it:

On of the shots I actually planned, got up early for and took a tripod so I could do it properly - you know - take care of the exposure, make sure the camera is level, use the ideal aperture, the self timer.

A proper photo in other words:

There had to be a shot or two of the boys, they really are my life and (for me) are very photogenic.

Dylan on a train in the Yorkshire dales:

...and the other one, always ready with a cheeky grin and such a fun little lad - don't grow up Thomas:

Finally an actual shoot, with a brief and a customer - this was favourite shot for both me and the band:

OK... here's mine... all nature I'm afraid, it's my main interest.

The first three are shots of the unusual Valezina form of a female Silver-washed Fritillary, I was so taken back to come across this butterfly twice in three days. Probably less than 5% of females turn out with this colouring and most are seen much further south than the Forest of Dean where I spotted it. Although the shots appear to be of different butterfies it is in fact the same one, I carefully studied many zoomed shots from both days in great detail to prove this fact. Both sightings were within about 100 yards of each other. It's amazing how the colours change according to the lighting and angle of the camera in relation to the butterfly.

My first decent shot of a Toad, it was not very comfortable lying down on a couple of dustbin liners in the wet grass.

156155168.jpg

My first ever sighting and photograph of a Golden-ringed Dragonfly.

Emperor Dragonfly... first keeper after dozens of attempts to capture a Dragonfly in flight and I managed it with my macro lens fitted.. not intentionally though.

Here's my six; I have been a bit held back by work and health issues in 2014 so reviewing my pictures while I feel the best are some of my best ever I can't help but feel I could have done a lot more, time allowing . That is NOT going to be repeated in 2015.

As you see I do like being by water it's my favourite place to be and to photograph.

Three of these were taken on one magical morning, had I been asked to pick my best twelve from the year I suspect six would have come form this one shoot and most of the rest from a three day trip earlier in the year!

hmm.... six shots that sum up a year with some big changes in my life and my photography.....

Remember a rather soggy February? This lad didn't realise how deep the water was :)

Watching a dragonfly hatch in May was rather special.

Then my life changed rather a lot.... At the beginning of the year I decided to try (emphasis on TRY) to learn to dance because, although I photograph a lot of vintage events, I'd never been to the associated dances because I couldn't dance!

So for the first 4 months of the year, I attended a beginners class, before expanding to two nights a week, then meeting and dancing with more people which gave me a lot more confidence, hence in August I went off to Twinwood Vintage music festival with some friends where the music was varied and extremely good. There was lots of dancing and I even forced myself onto the dance floor as well as taking pictures. Fortunately I have some photographically inclined dance friends who managed to catch me a few times.

This isn't me (obviously) but one of the 'Bobcats' band who were performing at Twinwood.

Lately I've been photographing quite a lot of bands and dance events, often with the Cambridge Lindy Hoppers who seem to get in everywhere if there is music.

Now I have a fairly regular dance partner in Anna who I managed to catch in an unguarded moment off the dance floor (that girl does not have an 'off switch') who helps me along with the different styles that we are trying to learn.

(A rather stern looking me)

Finally, here's me with a different Anna, taken about a week ago a still enjoying the dance and music.

Quite a lot slimmer than at the start of the year.

Who knows what next year will bring?.....

Some great pics in this thread.

I could not help but have a wry smile at the title BP used "The End Is Nigh" as that really summed up my year. :)

You see in late February I was diagnosed with terminal stage four lung cancer I made the decision to not give in and fight it which was followed by long intensive sessions of Chemo, and in August my oncologist told me I was cancer free and in remission, he described it as phenomenal and at the moment it is still that way. :)

So I make no apologies for all my favourites being of my Grandchildren in my garden in the summertime as they and photography were my all consuming passion at the time and helped keep me grounded. :)

Some lovely pictures coming up on here!! Mine are not all perfect, but are very special to me.

This thread was an absolute no brainer for me, although I have sneaked in 7 images, two of which were not taken by me, but I have copies of them in a special folder that I regularly look at and always with a smile on my face. These are from my UK trip, and every one of them represents a very precious and highly enjoyable 'moment in time'.

I met up with Fuji:

This trip was most certainly the highlight of my year, and looking back on pictures recording where I went will always give me pleasure. :D
