Hi

Could I please ask for a general critique.

Any suggestions on how to improve will be very welcome.

I hope that I am not asking too many questions, please say if I am.

Many thanks

The view is fine - but the clouds are blown out a little particularly towards the centre, and there is a dark area bottom right with no detail.

An HDR might have helped, but if you use Lightroom, you could try to recover some localised sky and shadows areas with the software.

The middle view could take a contrast tweak to give it a little more oomph too.

Hi Mike, firstly did you shoot it RAW or jpeg,? Your settings look about right for the bright conditions but it looks like the camera has taken its readings from centre of the scene which has overexposed and blown  the highlights. If you shot this RAW it will probably be possible to re balance things in either Canon Raw converter or if  oyu use either Photoshop, Elements of Lightroom RAW converter, and then carry out minor adjustments in any of these programs--or any PP program you may have.

So if it were me I would bring down the highlight in the sky and find some definition in the cloud, then de-saturate the greens a browns a little and bring a better overall colour balance to the picture.

Have fun

Hi Geoff

Will give your suggestions a try...thanks

I always shoot raw and process with LR and, or PS.

I struggle to determine the correct level of adjustment to make.

Appreciate your help.

Cheers

I would agree with Chris and also add 'time of day'. I'm assuming this was taken whilst on holiday or similar but for me the shot would be far better earlier or later in the day, but obviously that might not have been at all possible. But it ain't a bad photo and an adjustment of the raw file to bring back the blown cloud would make it very 'viewable'.

Composition - excellent.

Contrast - way too much.

Saturation - too much.

Hi Chris

I very much appreciate your help.

I have adjusted the image as per yours and others suggestions and I think it looks much more natural.

Am I out of order if I repost and ask for more comments?

Sorry if this is  stupid question, just don't want to upset anyone or waste their time.

Cheers

Hi

Following my original posting and all of the excellent advice from you guys on this site, I have re-edited this image to what I hope

is much more like the vista on the day.

Again any suggestions on how to improve my processing will be very welcome

It was shot at early afternoon, hence the heat mist on the valley floor.

Canon 5D Mk2

Canon 24-105 f/4 L

Many thanks

Actually I rather like it, though wearing my HDR hat as I say so... you've flattened out all the contrast while retaining a high level of detail, which is typical HDR. I think my ideal though, would be somewhere halfway between the two?

Here you go......like these...

Enjoy......... then let us see your conversions......don't forget that Ansel, did lots if post processing in the Darkroom to achieve his amazing depths.

FUJI

Hi FUJI

Just viewed this video, it is awesome.

When I was in Yosemite I went to the Ansel Adams gallery but you or should I say "I" tend to forget how magnificent his images are.

I will try to convert this next week when I can lock myself away and concentrate for an hour or two.

Thanks again

I think you have gone too far the other way with the second version. To little contrast and looks way over-sharpened; also looks like an HDR which is not a good thing despite advice above.

As you and I both shoot with a 5DMk3 I can say for certain that if you got the original exposure right then there is enough to go on and get a super image from the one file.

In Lightroom ( I think you said you use that) go back to the default settings

Run a 1 to 1.5 stop grad over the sky to hold the clouds in (landscape work is a lot easier (better) if you have some ND grads to use at the taking stage)

Use the highlight slider to make any further recovery needed

If the shadows are too much open them up but by no more than +80 or noise will creep in

Set the clarity at 12 and the vibrance and saturation at 19 as a starting point

Set sharpening as per the first screen shot in the article http://billallsopp.com/2014/08/30/canon-5dmk3-raw-sharpening/ and lets see what you get from that please.

Hi Bill

Thanks very  much for your help it is really great to find a forum where the comments posted on a photo are not just

"Good Job or Well Done"

I have tried so many site trying to get valuable critiques and this is by far the best that I have come across.

I don't mind but I guess some folk get offended by negative critiques, I am not one of them, all I want to do is learn the art of Photography.

Just for your info, I do have Lightroom, Photoshop CC, Nik collection and a few Topaz plug ins, Clarity, Adjust and Remask so I guess that I am well covered for now.

I will give your suggestion a go next week and post the outcome

Thanks again

Cheers
