AAARRRGGGHHH Can i get some advice please

Recommended Posts

Ive been looking at wide lenses for a few days as im wanting to upgrade my 18-55 on my Canon 60d.

Ideally i was thinking of an L series lens for the better image quality but i dont want a fisheye so i have been looking at a Canon ef 17-40 F4 L but on my 60d it will be roughly 28-65mm,

Ive read  loads of reviews some say its an excellent lens, some say its good on a full frame body and some say its mediocre on a modern APSC body.

Does anybody use this lens on an APSC body and whats your opinion of it

Am i wasting money buying a L series when i should just buy an ef-s lens

Please help

Hi Caz

I have the 17-40 which I use on a 5DMk3 and the 10-22 which I use on a 7D.

For all practical purposes (i.e. in real world terms) there is nothing between them. I can thoroughly recommend them both but for a crop sensor the 10-22 is probably the way to go.

Neither is perfect, the biggest practical issue being chromatic aberration but there is little to choose between them as regards IQ and Lightroom easily fixes CA anyway.

Attached are three pics made with the 10-22 on my 7D, the one of Flamborough being a pano of 4 or 5 frames

They are saved at low file sizes to fit this forum but are A Ok at full size and all have been accepted by a curated stock library I use.

Hi Bill and thankyou very much for the reply and the images.

Id looked at the 10-22mm as i wanted an ultra wide lens  for landscapes.

Nice photos BIll and im going to go with the 10-22mm the 17-40 wasn't as wide as i ideally wanted but i thought if the quality was far superior id make do.

Thanks BIll

Could always rent a 17-40 - I did when I was trying to decide what to get - I've a Sigma 10-20 (price was a factor, as always) - Actually, you're probably close enough to borrow it for a go if you wanted

My problem (at first) was I tended to get my foot in the shot!! it really is wide :-)
