I can see what you were trying to do....I like the idea........but it doesn't quite come off........

Two ways to go I think?

1: Similar processing but much grittier?

2: A smoother mono version with a full range of tones in, with the nearest fence posts sharpened, to add depth?

Thanks for the comments everyone, yes, it was just one of those little experiments, some work others don't. I liked the composistion but was let down by the flat skies and wasn't sure what else to do with it.

How about a mono with contrast whacked up  quite high? Somewhere between the original and your PP.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions, and they've all made be think about 2 images that I initially discarded as not being any good the first time I looked at them. This high key image I posted was a much lighter version than I'd initially done. Obviously I like the high key version (or I wouldn't have posted it), so many thanks.

 

consider taking the top down to the front pole to create more impact

 

I'll definitely have a look at a tighter crop and lose more of the sky.
