Awesome isn't a word I use often (probably because most things described as awesome just aren't), but that first image in the set really is something special.

 

It conveys the power and might and unstoppableness (no, it's not a word) of the ocean and it's a superb and truly awesome image.

 

The others are good too, but not awesome.

I'm not sure about the term gritty?  I see motion, curves, colours, mountains but above all the power of nature in something as simple as water.

Amazing the could just as easily be volcanic lava rock the way they have been frozen.

That's what I see! They look as though they are made of stone. That's better than 'gritty'.

Although number two is nice. Looks more natural than the others.

That I can understand and as an example this one looks like a scene in the Peak District whilst at the same time shows movement - wonderful!
