Stublick Moor at night

Between Hexham and Alston, I've been passed this chimney countless times, in all weathers, but I've never stopped before. A mile long flue connected this chimney to the lead smelting mill in Langley. Its purpose was to carry the poisonous fumes from the smelt mill by natural ventilation. The Langley smelt mill was built in 1768 for the Greenwich Hospital for Seamen to process their ore from mines on Alston Moor.#

Moon shots and star trails are not the sort of stuff I like, but this is exceptional Jon, The chimney makes it for me, a centre of focus rather than just those dashes that go round and round.

Hexham is a lovely place, and although you say you have passed countless times before, I bet you are glad you stopped on this occasion..

Thanks people, that is the shot I got in my mind when I first saw a star trail picture, so I'm glad it works for others too :-)

My mother was born and raised in Alston and I used to spend a lot of time up there when my Grandparents (and great grandparents) were still with us.

Actually, I'm still there pretty regularly, 4 generations in the cemetery, which is a wonderful place to sit and think :-)

My mam has pointed out that I used to stop there with my Grandfather when I was little, but when my Gran found out we used to walk the flue to Langley we had to stop.  Its filled in now, mind, that would be 40+ years ago :-)
