Newmarket Hilly 100 (yes, seriously)

Last Sunday there was a bit of a cycle ride around the area, not really a race that I could tell, more of a timed event for the cyclists.

There were three routes of 25, 50, and 100 miles and the 100 mile route took in some country lanes and bumps near where I live (can't really call them hills), so I took the opportunity to try something different.

The real problem was the bright sunlight combined with the fact most riders were leaning forwards so their faces were in shadow.  Mainly rubbish pictures but here's a few that didn't work too badly apart from not getting motion in the wheels.

Most taken on full manual @ 1/500s and f13. Canon 5D mkII and Canon 70-200 f/4 L

#2 works best for me as I can see the hard effort involved (#5 would be also, but the rider knows he is being photographed!)

There's an engaging symmetry in #4 which makes up for its lack of drama (they look as though they're out for a Sunday ride!!), while in #3 you can actually see the drama of the race and the gritty determination of the riders.
