No

People assume these shots are hard, though I do have a fair amount of gear.

I simply used a backdrop, reflector and HSS Flash, (Metz 45 CL4 digital, with Quantum fast recycle batter4y pack), any flash allowing HSS will do, OR in fact any flash that can you can adjust the power setting on to allow multiple shots without the recycle delay, this was taken with the flash set to 1.20,000th of a second.  Nikon SB910s, 700s and others will work.

This one appeared on the ITV Alan Titchmarsh show

In fact what you don't see is (1) the wireless shutter release triggered at high fps which I start JUST before (2) bursting the balloon with a needle on a black opened out plastic coat hanger

Thank you Jeremy for the detailed explanation of how you shot this.
Just goes to show doesn't it... you can take absolutely amazing shots without all the fancy gadgets, if you know what you are doing which you obviously do!
Top shot!

Too many people try to sell you what you don't need, if you only have a basic flash buy loads of balloons, try7 different coloured waters etc.

This was with my son shooting an air rifle at bulbs turned on outside, done exactly the same way but in the dark no flash as the lights are bright enough

Wonderful...i really enjoy looking at this sort of photography. I really like the original post, but I love the blue/purple explosion.

I make enough mess just doing water drops, so I shan't be trying this anytime soon..!!!
