I thought it was a hoverfly as it first flew past, but once it landed on the laurel (bad photo below) I realised it was a sawfly of some description.

Further research confirmed this.

The eye? Yeah, we would never consider any bug being affected with it's eyesight but it shows that things like this do occur, but without such a close up, it would have been undetected.

This was (surprisingly for me) a hand held photo too !

WOW! Paul.......This is Macro Photography of the highest order..... the detail revealed it truly amazing....good to see the Latin titles too....they reflect your seriousness...
