Yes, it is a surveyors wheel. I believe they are very accurate.

Thanks, David.  I can vaguely remember using something like that at school to measure the length of the playground - it made a clicking noise once per revolution and we had to count the clicks.

Thank you all, for a lovely response...... Yes! It is a measuring device for distance, possibly a click for every metre? .Currently we are having major resurfacing work done on the main road between town and home.... ..see my next post for the reason lots of measuring is going on.

Thanks Dee....and thank you too for your other observations.... ....I guess that, as you will be preparing for cooler times... ...all of us just can’t wait until we get more light, more warmth, less wet and, best of all ....say farewell to the wearing  of masks, to be able to socialise again.... not forgetting the hair cut....

I’m scared to go out now, in  case I trip over my fringe....
