Many of you will know that my eldest has an interest in wildlife, actually its more than just that, he's in his second year at college studying zoology and hopes to specialise in entomology, but he has also picked up my interest in photography......sort of.

He uses a camera as a tool, isn't interested in the technical side and can quite often be heard swearing when it won't do as he wants, but he does know his subjects and it does help him get some interesting shots.

He is out every day with it looking for new things to share on his Instagram which he has built from a handful of followers just before Lockdown to over 800 from all around the world who comment, share his work, ask for ID's and actively engage. It is amazing to see how his social media is taking off and how there are people who actively wait for him to post at 4pm (peak digital footfall says Dylan) so they can see the next weirdly natural photograph.

Take a look at his work here: https://www.instagram.com/weirdlynaturalphotography/

As we know a good photograph can be made or lost down to the light and with tiny subjects in dank parts of the woods and rock pools light is everything. I gave Dylan my Metz LED panel but he was getting quite hard spectral highlights from it so we had a go at diffusing it - first with bits of paper, then with cardboard and then because I have a mate with a laser engraving/cutting machine we designed and built a proper soft box specifically to hold the Metz and to give very, very soft light.

You can read about the story and the build here: https://robinhunterblog.wordpress.com/2020/09/07/weirdlynaturalphotography/

When Dylan is photographing his bug I tend to lurk about shooting him, partially because he's my son but also so he has some background shots for his IG story. He doesn't care how scruffy he gets, how wet he gets, what could be crawling on him or anything, it is all about the shot and the interesting things he finds - young eyes are amazing because nine times out of ten I can't even see what he's shooting even when he points them out so how he spots them just walking along I will need know. To give you an idea just how close he often get - see below

All the time spent outdoors paid off when he entered a local wildlife photography competition and won with his close up shot of a cuckoo wasp. These things a bloody tiny, like less than 10mm tiny, and they don't stay still and they're not easy to spot and to be honest until he came home with pictures of them I'm not entirely convinced I'd even heard of them. Actually this is common with Dylan. I have learned more about creepy-crawlies in the last year os so than I ever thought possible. Because they are now over watering as grubs and pupae (we have a glass tank in the house full of stuff you just don't want to know about) he has switched to fungus and, as you might guess, I'm now learning all about them. It fascinating, don't get me wrong, but the occasional discussion about sex and beer wouldn't go amis ?

Take a looks at his photography in the link and if you're on IG give him a follow  I guarantee you will learn something new every day.

Oh WOW!

You must be SO proud of Dylan, I could almost see thus coming, because yiu are such a dedicated dad, who really got involved in activities as they developed....I must be ab]nficn. ‘Cos I recall him as an infant, and the birth of your younger son.......

His work is amazing, and as I dabble in unusual/arty macro too.... I’m particularly interested..

Tell him to try creating his own DIY ldnses, using old Projector or Cine ldnses like I have...something like tgat might help his coursework ?

The Leica, projector lenses are very cheap, and so easy to convert using hot glue and an M 42 adapter...plus a bit of sticky tape....

Please wish him well from me......

We are so proud of our eldest granddaughter, she is now a newly qualified Equine veterinary  surgeon ....

Our youngest granddaughter is studying small animal husbandry and care, at Agricultural College... sadly she has a physical handicap that prevents much activity.

I get results like this.. from my cobbled together lenses.....hope you and he don’t mind the intrusion ..

I follow your blog on weirdlynaturalphotography and saw the  details about your diffuser light box that your friend  helped make ... most impressive and  Dylan must have been pleased  with the difference it would have made  to his pics ... Well done Dylan on that fabulous photo ...and good luck with your  ambition in Entomology...

Looks like he has all the ingredients  for a successful  future  life and career Robin .... and that's  all we really want for our kids isn't it ?:yes

He isn't interested in the cameras, the lenses or anything at all to do with photography so while a great idea you haven't a cat in hells chance of convincing him a manual lens and adapters would be a good idea. It is a tool that needs to work automatically or it gets sworn at.

He is really putting his mind to study and wildlife which you're right is a wonderful thing for a parent to see. He ended up running rock pool tours over the summer as he because so knowledgable about the wildlife and (handily) so good at finding it. Made about £300 until someone complained to the council and he was told to either get insurance, register as a business and apply for written permission to be there or they would forcibly stop him. Daft thing was he only charged a couple of quid each and the local families he took down loved every second of his guidance.

Whilst it does seem daft, all it takes is one person to trip and fall and make a claim against Dylan, Public Liability Insurance covers you against Compensation claims, Legal Expenses, Cost of Repairs and Medical Fees. I have it because clients visit my home office, I also have to let my car insurance know that I'm using my car for both business and personal use rather than just commuting to work and personal use. Unfortunately in this claims culture it's better to have it than not.

What a flippin short sighted and bureaucratic  view to take of that kind of educational entrepreneurial ambition  that one should endorse and encourage in youngsters ..  he needs a sponsor who can see the long term advantage to getting people to come to that area  and help set up an entomology educational adventure excursion  ...   Maybe crowd funding  even ..     I understand the need to protect I oneself from litigation..   fine. But the response seems so negative ... I hope he considers finding a way to do it next summer holidays ..

Thats pretty much what they said but were very heavy handed in the way it was put across to him. We did some digging and I think it is something to do with the National Trust (they also contacted Dylan saying he shouldn't run his guided tours) who look after that coastline and usually run paid tour over the summer themselves. They can't because of CV19 and I think something has been said to the council to stop him. The council actually said he couldn't use the beach as it was their land - we looking into that and its public property - the council can't stop him entering so they're just being awkward. Daft thing was this happened two weeks before he went back to college so they would have pretty much stopped anyway. The sad thing is he had become involved with a local special needs group and was showing 10 of the kids around at a time, just for an hour and with their carers there to keep it safe. The kids loved the rock pools and some even opened up to Dylan in ways they hadn't before. The lady running the support group couldn't thank Dylan enough and over paid him for every visit.

We're going to see what can be done next year once the weather improves and the wildlife starts to come back - winter there is little in the pools. It all boils down to the cost of the PLI and whether he can get it cover for the the of thing he's doing.

I held off from making a comment.... I still dont know what to say other than what an amazing young man who is an absolute credit to you both. He is also lucky to have a father who is an accomplished photographer to guide and instruct in the art.

Well done to him, I could only see a few images before instagram wanted me to sign up.

BP, it is a public beach, you can get £5 million worth of cover for PLI for as little as £58 a year from AXA or from the ones I have used in the past Hiscox Ltd for airfield memorial dedications, and that can be paid monthly for £10 million coverage from about £8 per month.
