Depends a bit on how black they would have been. I think a featureless (or nearly featureless) black in the foreground would be distracting. I'd say the level is about right.

[That image does show how anisotropic my monitor is. When the image is at the top of the screen above eye-level the reeds are decidedly dark, but at the bottom below eye-level the detail is clearly visible]

I didn't know I  had a trademark Sky Den !  I do know that  I rarely take a photo when there are just cloudless skies...  I might need to though if I start taking pics of  night skies like you did recently .. I've just bought a new intervalometer and am reading up  on the techniques.  ... You're never too old to learn ....so they say !:book: :wacko:
