Sacred Kingfisher

We have two kingfishers in our district: this larger one and the smaller more brightly coloured Azure Kingfisher. I went with another keen bird photographer to Tang Tang Swamp (new to me) where I was happy to get some photos of this one.

I agree with JohnP  ... a  very nice catch ...  you must be pleased with that....... Are they as difficult t o spot as our kingfishers seem to be ... at least in my experience. ?

Thank you Polly and John. I am pretty pleased with it. I expect your kingfishers and ours are pretty similar in their size (small), abundance (not that common) and behaviour (fast): all of which makes them quite difficult to spot and photograph. The photographer I was with used an birdsong app paired with a Bluetooth speaker to bring the bird closer. This is not my usual practice and I’m not sure I’m 100 percent comfortable about it. Birdlife Australia is developing a code of ethics and I’ll be interested to see whether it takes a position on using these strategies.

Great capture, that beak looks very over sized

Thanks Geoff. It does look very over -sized. Their beaks are disproportionately large but I think the angle of view is also probably exaggerating it’s size.
