DO YOU REALLY NEED EXPENSIVE GEAR?

Recommended Posts

Do we really need expensive gear?

Currently, after discussion with photographer friends I am hoping to prove that you really don’t.

So today I set myself a challenge.... to equal or to get extremely close to output from a Leica M 9 Monochrome camera costing circa £8500 With lens.

My gear.... A second hand LUMIX GX9 camera at £375.... with a just-arrived, vintage Soviet Russian ....INDUSTAR 61 D .... film camera rangefinder lens from circa 1972 ...it cost just £19 delivered via eBay this morning.

The camera was set, to shoot W/O LENS.... aperture F8.... Lens set to...Zone-Focus between 10 feet and 200 feet ... making it a point and shoot camera if aimed between those distances.

Both bikes were moving at speed.... so very fast reactions were required to capture them.... the jogger was at speed too, and 30 feet away at least....

both bike Giles had to be greatly reduced in side to upload to forum... one still won’t load....I will try again later.

commdnts and observations encouraged.

As far as equipment and users goes, I think it can roughly be represented as a 3×3 contingency table, with three type of photographer: novice, competent and expert and three types of equipment: rubbish, basic and high-end.
