Great photo.
We have a night heron here seen around the creek at times called the Nankeen Night Heron. Similar appearance with the long white plume at the neck. Ours is cinnamon colours.

that's sounds like it's a yellow crowned night heron.  they look pretty similar, except the top of their head is a pale yellow instead of black.
