HOME ON THE RANGE

Is that a roasting spit on the left?

Yes! It has a very clever clockwork mechanism that counter-rotates a hanging joint, or chops if hung from the periphery of the wheel.... it’s lovely to listen to, but we’ve never tried it fir real.

I love the original Pot-Crane that swings out over the hot embers... the range features dampers to send heat where it us required and to regulate the excellent drought .

the two hobs reach different temperatures fir boiling and simmering....

should the satellites fall, and the green power fail, we are ready..... ?

Thanks, I thought it had to be something like that.

I guess a range like that is really a transitional phase between cooking on an open fire and "modern" ovens. Roasting has probably changed more than any other method of cooking, so that it's one of the few areas where Eliza Acton's recipes (1845 / 1865) are no longer usable.

Amazing piece of victorian tech that is still working as designed, thanks for sharing it with us :)

Thank you everyone....

It burns almost anything, currently it is only approved smokeless fuel, plus the occasional short log.

We keep it, plus three other Victorian fireplaces just in case we have power cuts, or ....God forbid, the satellites stop working ....
