Wild Hops

Recommended Posts

I found this Wild Hop vine growing next to an old footbridge last weekend. I wish I had found it earlier before the ravages of Autumn had set in. Reading up on this, I was pleased to see that a local craft Brewery was asking for people to donate them to make a beer from. I must remember this in time for next September...

I often see wild Hops growing in my area, when I was very young I used to go Hop picking with my mother, hops were grown over a wide area in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Some of the Hop Yards were only a few hundred yards from where I live now, unfortunately they are now housing estates and some of the roads are named after varieties of Hops. There are some Hops still grown in Herefordshire, they seem to be short varieties grown these days and not the 12ft tall vines I remember.
