The Indian variety I see  ....  such magnificent beasts ....and so intelligent ... What is scary is that they could become as rare as Hens' teeth if the poachers  aren't stopped  .... and  a ZOO may become the only place where you'll be able to see live elephants ...

Thanks Clicker, both times I've been to Chester Zoo the Elephants were very popular with people.

George Mottershead who founded the zoo wanted to build a zoo without the traditional Victorian iron bars to cage the animals, he was influenced by the ideas of Carl Hagenbeck, who invented the modern zoo concept.

I know there is an argument for and against zoo's (I'm for) because as Clicker says its the only way were are going to keep these magnificent beasts alive.
Great shots Rye they have such expressive faces. A happy smile yet such sad eyes.
