John P, would these make it into next year or are they on their way out ?

Denis... Of the 59 species of butterflies in Britain there are only five that can overwinter as adult butterflies, the other 54 all spend the winter months as eggs, chrysalises or as larvae.  The Silver-washed Fritillary in my photo will not last much longer, that also applies to johntwo's butterflies. The first of johntwo's is a Small  Tortoiseshell, although that is one of the five this one won't survive it's in too poor a condition, the second looks like a Meadow Brown, it's too washed out and tatty to be sure though.

This will explain. https://bardofelysays.blogspot.com/2015/11/butterflies-in-november-and-british.html
