That’s interesting. I’ve been reading John Lewis-Stempel’s books, in particular one about traditional farming practices in England called The Running Hare where he talks about poppies (and other wild plants) growing in corn fields in the past.  I suspect the author would also take pleasure in “rogue poppies” in a canola field like David.

 Flanders Poppies are used to commemorate Remembrance Day here in Australia so I assumed they were native to Flanders not England. They are always red not pink/purple like your second photo.
